With the unprecedented impact that Erling Haaland has had at Manchester City, he is naturally always compared to Sergio Aguero.
Kevin De Bruyne suggested Aguero is better than Haaland as he described the Argentine as “the best all-round striker” he has ever played with.
However, John Giles claimed Haaland has surpassed Aguero in a Manchester City shirt already.
Nathan Ake named Aguero as one of his toughest-ever opponents as well — harking back to his struggles against the retired marksman when he was AFC Bournemouth.
Frank Lampard admitted he was “amazed” by Aguero when they played together at City — despite sharing a dressing room with Didier Drogba at Chelsea.
In March, when Haaland was thinking about a Manchester City legend he would like to play with, Rodri jokingly said in a video with the club’s official in-house media: “Don’t say Sergio [Aguero], you will go on the bench.”

Erling Haaland admits Sergio Aguero is Man City’s best-ever striker
The pair alongside Carlos Tevez would widely be considered as City’s greatest-ever goalscorers.
The likes of Edin Dzeko and Shaun Goater are other names who would also be in the conversation.
But when Haaland was quizzed about which striker is the greatest in Manchester City’s history, he named Aguero instead of himself.
The Norwegian said via Manchester City’s in-house media: “Sergio Kun Aguero is the best striker to ever play for City.”
Haaland equalled Aguero’s Champions League goal tally when he scored against FC Copenhagen last season.
Haaland has also outdone Aguero in the respect that during Manchester City’s 1-0 win against Brentford during the 2023/2024 campaign, he had officially scored against every Premier League he had faced; something the former Atletico Madrid striker failed to as he did not score against Bolton Wanderers.
Furthermore, the 24-year-old even managed to surpass the 36-year-old’s best tally of 26 goals in a league season in the 2014/2015 campaign with 27 goals last season — nine less than his record-breaking goal record during his debut season at the Etihad Stadium.
Haaland vs Aguero goal record at Man City
Haaland and Aguero are arguably two of the best finishers to have ever graced Manchester City.
Both strikers have tormented defences across English football with their tremendous movement and eye for goal.
Despite being vastly different players, both number nines specialise in scoring goals. Here is a statistical comparison of Haaland and Aguero’s respective goal tallies at Manchester City.
| COMPETITION | HAALAND GOALS | AGUERO GOALS |
| PREMIER LEAGUE | 73 | 184 |
| CHAMPIONS LEAGUE | 19 | 36 |
| FA CUP | 8 | 20 |
| CARABAO CUP | 11 | 1 |
The former Borussia Dortmund phenomenon still has plenty more goals to score to match the City legend’s exceptional goal record.
Haaland perhaps recognises that being the case and as a result, he still considers Aguero as the superior goalscorer for Manchester City.
But if the star striker continues to operate at the level he has so far, he could widely be considered as the Sky Blues’ greatest-ever number nine.
