The Man City career of Kevin De Bruyne is coming to an end.

The Belgian superstar has just five games left in a sky blue shirt, unless the midfielder joins the Premier League giants for their FIFA Club World Cup campaign, although it has been reported that De Bruyne wants a break this summer.

Man City have confirmed their plans to celebrate De Bruyne’s career during their last home game of the season against Bournemouth, which will be an emotional affair for all involved with the Manchester club after the success they have had together over the last 10 years at the Etihad Stadium.

Given the status of the City superstar, many have been intrigued by what the 33-year-old will do next, and a favourite for his signature has now emerged.

Chicago Fire the favourites to sign Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne

Fabrizio Romano reported last week that the Chicago Fire are very interested in signing De Bruyne this summer and that the Man City superstar was keen to hear about their project.

According to The Athletic, Chicago Fire are now the favourites to sign the Premier League legend and will be confident of getting a deal done given the restrictions around a move to Inter Miami.

De Bruyne previously engaged in discussions with Lionel Messi’s team, which owned his discovery priority in MLS, a league mechanism that gives teams the right to negotiate with a player. However, Miami’s three designated player spots are already occupied by the Argentina superstar, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

The Fire were among three other MLS teams to express interest in signing the Belgian midfielder at the end of the season, with D.C. United and NYCFC being the other two, but Chicago are believed to be ahead of these two franchises.

Chicago now holds the priority to negotiate with De Bruyne to bring the 33-year-old to MLS this summer, who would prefer a move to the United States over a big-money switch to Saudi Arabia.

Other options for Kevin De Bruyne

As the 2024/25 campaign draws closer to its conclusion, European clubs could always enter the picture for De Bruyne and according to the report, that would put the Belgian’s move to Chicago at risk as staying in Europe is the midfielder’s priority.

De Bruyne left the door open to remain in the Premier League after Man City’s recent clash with Crystal Palace, with Don Hutchison believing Liverpool could be an option for the City legend.

Joining another English club would be silly for the 33-year-old given his relationship with Man City; therefore, should an offer arrive from a top German or Spanish club, the Belgian star could opt for that route.

De Bruyne’s future has yet to be decided, however, a clear leader for his signature has now emerged and it is up to others to catch up.
