Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim, who has been linked with replacing Pep Guardiola at Manchester City is now being rumoured to be targeted by Manchester United as well.
Reputed journalist David Ornstein revealed that Manchester United are “working on a deal” to appoint Amorim after sacking Erik ten Hag, with the Portuguese tactician believed to “open” to accepting the job.
United are also claimed to be happy to pay the 39-year-old’s release clause worth €10 million (£8.3 million) to secure his services.
On Monday, it was also reported that Manchester United are trying to persuade Ruben Amorim by telling him that if Pep Guardiola leaves Manchester City next year, they will become a “fading force” — as it was detailed that he has agreed a deal in principle to join the Red Devils.
Less than two weeks, it was claimed that Manchester City had identified Amorim to replace Guardiola alongside Xabi Alonso in the event that he left the club upon the expiry of his contract in the summer of 2025.
It was also revealed that Ruben Amorim was “100 per cent interested” in managing Manchester City to take on the daunting task of succeeding the six-time Premier League winner.

Ruben Amorim could “wait” for Man City job over managing Man United now
Pep Guardiola has lauded Amorim in the past as well after witnessing City face his Sporting side in the Champions League during the 2021/2022 season.
Bruno Fernandes backed Ruben Amorim to succeed in England — as his quotes would likely excite the Old Trafford faithful.
However, journalist Guillem Balague has reported that Amorim would rather “wait” for the Manchester City job and assess Guardiola’s future rather than head to Manchester United.
United are believed to be “pushing” to ensure the highly-rated manager signs on the dotted line while also having contacted Fulham boss Marco Silva.
Earlier this month, a claim emerged that people within the game feel Guardiola’s feelings about staying at Manchester City seemingly change on a daily basis.
However, it was speculated in October that Pep Guardiola could extend his contract at Manchester City until 2026 — with his chances of doing so looking even likelier if his side are found guilty of financial wrongdoing by the Premier League.
Back in April, it was stated that Ruben Amorim follows Manchester City’s games closely due to being an admirer of the Catalan tactician.
Amorim made a claim about Hugo Viana that may prove he is not Man City-bound
In October, Amorim confirmed his future was not linked to Hugo Viana, who will start his work as Manchester City’s sporting director early next year before fully succeeding Txiki Begiristain at the end of the season.
“They are different paths. We just have a professional relationship, which will not last forever.”
With Ruben Amorim claimed to be keen on heading to Manchester United, his claim might suggest that he had always intended not to follow Hugo Viana to the Etihad Stadium.
But after Guillem Balague’s latest claim about Amorim’s future, it seems like he is in two minds.
On one hand, Ruben Amorim could well be tempted at the prospect of helping Manchester United recapture their glory days.
But any ambitious manager would also back themselves to coach a winning institution like Manchester City and take over the reins after Pep Guardiola.
