Former Manchester City manager makes a prediction about what Kevin De Bruyne will do after leaving the Etihad

Manchester City fans have only a few more games left to see Kevin De Bruyne in a Sky Blue shirt.

After 10 years at the Etihad Stadium, De Bruyne will leave Man City at the end of the season upon the expiration of his contract as the Premier League club opted not to renew the 33-year-old’s current deal.

De Bruyne is yet to decide if he will play for Man City at the FIFA Club World Cup, as the midfielder is said to want a break before embarking on his next adventure.

The veteran star is looking to end his time with the Manchester club on a high and has stepped up in recent weeks, with Alan Shearer full of praise for his performance against Crystal Palace last month, which the Belgian followed up last Friday by scoring the winner against Wolves.

Former Man City boss and player, Peter Reid, has now been speaking about the club legend, with the 68-year-old revealing that he would have kept the Belgian at the Etihad for a while longer.

Peter Reid thinks Kevin De Bruyne will prove people wrong

The last two seasons have not been the best for De Bruyne in Manchester, with Ben Foster believing the Man City star is now too slow for the Premier League.

This is a view many share, and despite some top performances from the Man City captain, it has become clear that the 33-year-old’s body is struggling to keep up with the demands of the Premier League.

Speaking on the Grumpy Old Men of Football podcast, Reid has admitted that he would have kept the Man City legend at the Etihad for longer and that he thinks the midfielder will be out to prove people wrong after De Bruyne admitted he wanted to remain with the Premier League giants.

“Would I have kept him? Possibly, possibly,” Reid said. “I believe he was carrying a niggle this season, but he’s one of the greats isn’t he. He can score goals, he can pick a pass, but Pep and Man City have decided to go a different way.

“I look at it in terms of De Bruyne. I’d want to prove people wrong and I think he has that character; we know what happened at Chelsea.

“Man City paid an awful lot of money, and people thought, ‘Wow, this guy isn’t good enough.’ But he proved a lot of people wrong. It wouldn’t surprise me if he went somewhere and did extremely, extremely well.”

To prove people wrong, De Bruyne will need a club, and it remains to be seen where the Belgian ends up as no decision has been made on that front yet.

The latest on Kevin De Bruyne’s future

Chicago Fire look set to be De Bruyne’s next team as the MLS side are keen on bringing the midfielder to America and have been pushing to get the deal over the line soon.

The only factor in stopping that move is if interest emerges from Europe, and recently, Liverpool have been linked to De Bruyne; however, they have since been shut down by journalists who cover the Merseyside club.

Jamie O’Hara tipped Arsenal to make a move for De Bruyne, but that is unlikely, as it is hard to see the superstar moving to another English club given his relationship with City.

If the midfielder is to continue his career in Europe, it will have to be outside of the Premier League, and the coming weeks should reveal if any major clubs on the continent arrive with offers for the 33-year-old star.
